Harvest Against Hunger in Stevens County is a collaborative effort of Rotary First Harvest, Providence N.E.W. Hunger Coalition, local Food Banks and Growers. This program strives to utilize local resources and opportunities to create a produce recovery model and build partnerships between Food Banks and Farmers.

An AmeriCorps*VISTA Volunteer (known as a Harvest VISTA) has been placed in Stevens County to engage the local community in the HAH initiatives and support local hunger relief groups. The Harvest VISTA will build sustainable and scale-able programs to increase the sale of local produce while simultaneously improving access to healthier food choices for hungry families.

Purchasing Program: Farm to Food Bank

The Purchasing Program provides a new opportunity to support local farmers while simultaneously giving hungry families healthier food choices. In 2014 we launched this new program with five local partner growers. Through the generosity of these growers and the commitment of our volunteers we purchased and gleaned 17, 679 pounds of produce for our food banks! Learn more about our local farmers below.

Grower’s Round Table Events

In an effort to capture our local growers vital input on the Purchasing Program, Gleaning Project and general agricultural opportunities of the area the Hunger Coalition and WSU Extension Office partnered to present the first two Grower’s Round Table events in the Fall of 2014.

Fourteen farms were represented at these first two round table events, and their involvement and support has helped guide the development and direction of our projects.

Additional Grower’s Round Table events will be held in the Spring and Fall of 2015. Mileage reimbursement is available for growers, door prizes and appetizers will also be present.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]
